A California resident called 9-1-1 in early August of 2020 to report an attack against a man by three dogs. The caller hung up immediately upon providing the information. Deputies from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene. Sheriff’s deputies were met at the scene of the attack by Animal Enforcement Officers and members of the Fire and Rescue Services.
First responders arrived to find the victim of the attack suffering from the type of dog bites that could require extended recovery time. The man received treatments for the dog bites on his right leg before being loaded in an ambulance for transport to a local hospital.
A violent encounter with dogs
The victim said he was leaving the house of a friend when he heard what sounded like the whimpering of small puppies. He explained that, when he tracked the sound of the whimpering, three adult dogs rushed at him. Witnesses described one of the dogs as a female pit/mix that possessed a red coat. The other dogs were both male pit/mixes with black and white coats.
When authorities arrived, the female dog was at the scene, but a short search was needed to locate the two male dogs.
The female dog was in poor condition and looked like she had not eaten for quite some time. The puppies were found in a nearby travel trailer and were also in bad shape. There was no food and water in the travel trailer that housed the three dogs and eight puppies, and the temperature was well over 100 degrees.
The owner of the dogs received citations for possessing an unrestrained animal, mistreatment and animal bite. She also faces a pending criminal charge for animal cruelty.
